PauseAI Nigeria seeks to contribute to a global halt on frontier AI development until it can be made safe and placed under meaningful democratic control, by mobilizing public awareness, policy engagement, and coordinated civic action within Nigeria.

What We Want

A world in which superhuman AI systems are not developed or deployed until:

• Robust safety guarantees exist.
• Democratic institutions have effective oversight and control.

This pause must be international, not local, due to global race dynamics in AI development.

The Problem We Are Addressing (Nigeria Context)

Despite growing global concern about AI risks, four barriers remain:

1. Low policy awareness in Nigeria.

• AI existential and systemic risks are largely absent from policy conversations.
• Policymakers often prioritize short-term innovation and economic upside over long-term safety.

2. Global race dynamics.

• Countries fear being left behind economically and strategically.
• Even informed actors are incentivized to prioritize speed over safety.
• Nigeria risks becoming a passive rule-taker rather than an informed voice in global AI governance.

3. Lack of urgency.

• AI progress is consistently underestimated.
• Rapid capability advances have not yet translated into proportional urgency in Nigerian discourse.

4. Psychological and Overton-window constraints.

• Existential AI risk is still perceived as too extreme or speculative.
• Serious pause discussion remains taboo in many political and elite spaces.
• Public concern exists but is under-organized and under-articulated.

Our Core Assumption

If Nigerian policymakers, media, students, and civil society understand:

• the scale of AI risks,
• Nigeria’s stake in global AI governance,
• and the feasibility of coordinated international action,

then Nigeria can:
