Nigeria must shape global AI governance, not inherit it

Nigeria's digital economy is on track to exceed half a trillion dollars in value this decade. That scale makes Nigeria a major stakeholder in how frontier AI is governed. Yet without coordinated international action, Nigeria risks seeing unsafe AI systems deployed by external actors, with outcomes written by nations and corporations far from Nigerian communities.

A temporary pause on frontier AI development is a practical step to establish safety guarantees and democratic oversight before deployment. It gives Nigeria—alongside other nations—time to:

  • Build policy capacity and independent audit frameworks
  • Protect financial systems, elections, and civic institutions from AI-enabled harms
  • Participate in international treaty negotiations from a position of principle
  • Ensure AI innovation serves Nigerian development priorities, not external interests
